Phil Collins Day & Parade Tomorrow in Brooklyn

Posted on February 14 2011, 3:09pm | Author: R* Q | Filed Under: Music

We’ve obviously never been shy about celebrating the music of Phil Collins, so imagine our delight to discover this morning that an official first annual Phil Collins Day and Parade has been planned to take place tomorrow, February 15th out in Brooklyn.

Says Gothamist.com: “There will be floats, dancers, a marching band, and tunes, Parading down Franklin St. in Greenpoint… Following the Phil parade, the celebration will continue with famous clips, songs, and the Phil Collins cocktail at Shayz Lounge (130 Franklin Street, Brooklyn).

We’re not quite sure of the significance of February 15th ourselves (the man was born on January 30th... and his first studio album was released on February 9th...) – so shout if anyone knows – but we’ll glad to throw on some “In the Air Tonight” and grab a slice of Phil pizza tomorrow nevertheless.

GTA Radio Alumni: Stretch Armstrong, Bobbito & Lord Sear 20th Anniversary Show in NYC this Thursday

Posted on February 8 2011, 7:17pm | Author: R* Q | Filed Under: Games, Music

** Update: For those interested in how the event went, there's a great article from the New York Times on it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/12/arts/music/12reunion.html **

This year marks the anniversary of two occasions notable for Rockstar fans as well as fans of 1990’s hip-hop – a decade since the release of Grand Theft Auto III in October of 2001 – and the 20th anniversary year since Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito’s legendary college radio show debuted on the airwaves.

The seminal Columbia University (WKCR) radio show aired every Thursday late night from late 1990 through 1998 – providing a platform for some of the biggest names in hip-hop to make their very first appearances on-air.
By the time Stretch Armstrong and Lord Sear appeared as DJs and hosts on the radio in Grand Theft Auto III, Stretch and Bobbito had amicably split to pursue separate endeavors – but last fall, the two reunited back at WKCR on the week of the 20th anniversary of their very first show in October 1990 – taking back over the airwaves for an epic 5 hour reunion special filled with nostalgia, amazing stories from the 90’s, super rare b-sides and jaw-dropping on-air freestyle session recordings from the archives of artists like Mobb Deep, Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, Big L, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard in their early days – not to mention the good old fashioned late night delirious tomfoolery their listeners loved them for.

Now, this coming Thursday night February 10th – Stretch, Bobbito and longtime co-host Lord Sear are properly celebrating this 20 year milestone with a one-night-only event at Le Poisson Rouge in downtown NYC – sure to be filled with lots of surprise guest artists paying homage to the groundbreaking radio show… and plenty of that good old fashioned tomfoolery. If you’re in the NYC area, you can get tickets at http://lepoissonrouge.com/events/view/1826.

Flashback Friday: Easy Lover

Posted on December 3 2010, 11:07am | Author: R* R | Filed Under: Rockstar, Music

A few months back, we threw up the video for Eddie Murphy's "Party All The Time" to show our undying support for the ethos that any time, is in fact, the right time to party. Today, we offer Phil Collins and Philip Bailey's "Easy Lover" — a fan favorite from Vice City Stories, but also a sobering companion piece to "Party All The Time". Both songs celebrate wild excess (it was the 80s) but they also warn of the pitfalls of going hard all the time. All that partying is great, but next thing you know, your girl doesn't come home anymore, your relationship is done and you’re hanging out with Rick James and/or Phil Bailey trying to figure out where your life went wrong. Seriously, you don’t want to ask that question to a man in leather pants. Maybe next time, you stop chasing models and popping bottles and instead you talk to the nice girl playing Chinatown Wars on the train. These are important things to consider as we head into the weekend.
