In the second part of our Rockstar Game Tips for the new GTA Online Freemode Events, we're looking at the ways to navigate Kill List and Competitive Kill List, Penned In, Dead Drop and Checkpoints on your road to successful mayhem. If you missed the first part of our Freemode Events Game Tips, check out Part One for more pro tips that will help you score big in the Freemode Events.
First things first - prepare yourself for the potential impending chaos of the Freemode Events. To emerge a survivor and victor in these games, we recommend taking on board the following general tips:
- Stock up on all the essentials. Make sure you're armed to the teeth with plenty of firepower and ammo to back it up, decent Armor to protect you and Snacks at the ready. A good range of vehicles at your disposal will also be hugely beneficial, so make sure you've got a reliable mix - from motorcycles to sturdy off-road wheels - and be ready to call your Mechanic should you need to. Getting airborne may come in handy too, so have a chopper or a plane primed at Pegasus.
- Be generous with those bills by teaming up with others to help you take on those tricky challenges. You can team up and share your cash by going to the Inventory section in your Interaction menu, and selecting Cash. From there, choose which player you'd like to share with as well as a percentage cut.
- Keep an eye out for the purple help text and UI, which will pop onto your screen every so often. These hints will give you some helpful information specific to the Freemode Events.
- Don't get distracted from your main objective. Staying focused on the prize in all the Events helps you avoid getting caught up in fights with other challengers, which puts you at risk of being defeated by another player.
- If you want to avoid auto-targeting your friends during Events, be sure to set your Player Targeting Priority to 'Strangers.'
KILL LIST AND COMPETITIVE KILL LIST
Make sure all the guns are manned to maximize your stopping power.
In this Event, you'll be taking control of some heavy hitting machinery to duke it out with persistent mercenaries from Merryweather Security. Once you enter the vehicle, the countdown timer will start and you'll begin to rack up cash and RP for each kill. The Competitive version of this Event allows you and up to three other players to eliminate the Merryweather soldiers. The player with the most kills after 8 minutes will also grab an additional cash and RP bonus.
The Merryweather Security heavies will be laying down some furious fire so be quick and stay on the move to avoid hits from the mercenaries. Make the most of the industrial vehicles and use the maximum amount of players for each vehicle to deal the most damage. With this boost in numbers per vehicle, work as a team to outmaneuver and take down Merryweather but avoid wasting time or ammunition on the opposing team as you're unable to damage them. Your focus should be on taking out the Merryweather troops and getting as many kills as you can to build up cash and RP. If you're hitting the skies with a chopper, players seated in the back should make the most of their heavy weapons and rain down damage from above. Keeping an eye on the radar will help you get the jump on the Merryweather gunships, lay down some heavy fire as they approach to destroy them before they get into their attacking range. Also watch out for Merryweather mercenaries stationed on the ground as they will often be armed with RPGs and will make good use of cover to avoid your fire.
Sticking close to the center of the dome and staying away from competitors is key to success in Penned In.
As soon as you see that Penned In is about to begin, jump into the nearest ride and find your way into the ring before the timer starts. The goal is to stay within the dome as it begins to move and shrink, attempting to knock other participants out, while doing your best to stay in the area. Your weapons are disabled for this round, so you must rely on expert driving skills to hold your ground and earn the cash and RP rewards.
As soon as you get notified of this Event, you'll need to think quick: an extra few seconds finding the right vehicle could mean you miss out on competing entirely. Bikes have greater maneuverability than cars but players should be wary of being easily knocked off by more heavy-weight contenders. However, while heavier, bigger vehicles are useful for pushing other cars out of the pen, you may find it harder to keep up the pace as the dome speeds up and shrinks in size. For those tempted by a plane or helicopter, don't forget that the dome has a height restriction - in our experience, steer well clear. Once you've chosen your vehicle, race as quickly as you can to get to the purple dome - the combo of a Merryweather pickup and a Mechanic delivery at the destination might be your best move.
Once the Event begins, remember that location is key, so try and keep to the middle of the pen and stay out of trouble. Competition will only get fiercer as the dome gets faster and smaller and there's less space to occupy. Keep an eye out for direction changes in the dome which could shift your momentum.
Work as a team, provide covering fire and protect those making a dash for the bag.
Dead Drop begins as soon as one person picks up the package that appears on your Radar. From there, each player battles to be the one holding the package when it reaches the destination marked on your map. There are cash and RP bonuses for taking out the holder, while the final carrier will pick up an extra cache as well as bragging rights for a smuggler’s run pulled off successfully.
There is significant strength in numbers in this Event, as long as you trust your partner to keep you safe and share the cash. Simultaneously driving and shooting is no easy skill, so sharing these tasks between two will turn you into a formidable force. Once you have the package, make a break towards a void of players - it can get tricky when you're totally surrounded. Avoid tight areas and corners where you could get boxed in with little room to escape. If you're the one doing the chasing then plan ahead and work out the best routes to counterattack and block the player with the parcel so that you can snap up your chance of victory.
Choosing the correct vehicle for the job will help immensely when collecting checkpoints.
When your Radar lights up with a plentiful number of Checkpoint icons, your objective will be to take to the land, sea or air to collect as many as you can in the allotted time. Before the Event begins, all of the players who want to join in will be directed to an area in Los Santos or Blaine County. Once there, they will then scatter in a mad dash to rack up the most Checkpoints with the aim to win cash and RP bonuses at the top of the leaderboard.
This is another Event where choice of vehicle is crucial in deciding whether you can make the top spot or not. Planes are faster but choppers can reach Checkpoints nestled in narrower, smaller places that planes may struggle with. For land Checkpoints dotted across rougher, heavy-duty terrain, consider using an off-road vehicle or a motorbike to speed up collection in tighter spots. Take the time to plan a route on your map, and steer clear of any congested areas - you don't want to waste precious time reaching a tricky Checkpoint only to have it snatched away from you as you approach. If you're in a Crew session, this is a great opportunity to test your teamwork skills: if ALL the checkpoints are collected, then everyone involved gets an extra GTA$5,000 and 1000 RP each. Numbers always welcomed by any pocket!

Whether you already consider yourself a seasoned veteran of the Rockstar Editor, or are just now starting to come to grips with this powerful new game feature in the hopes of winning the current Rockstar Editor Video Contest, you'll want to have a good grasp of how cinema is used as a language to convey themes and drive a narrative. The third installment in our Rockstar Editor Tips Series offers a look at some popular methods to achieve this.
Try manual focus pulls between objects at different distances for an intense cinematic effect.
Dive into some real world cinema studies for great examples of how to effectively do this. John Hillcoat (The Proposition, The Road) created a short film based on Red Dead Redemption several years back which uses key techniques such as establishing shots, montage, flashback, zooms, and pans. Take the time to critically assess the work of your favorite directors and consider what the aesthetic choices they've made are and more importantly, why they've made them. For real life directors who are famous for work in the arena of music videos, may we recommend checking out the back catalogue of Michel Gondry, Chris Cunningham, Greg Bunkalla and Gangrene's own Jason Goldwatch. Some specific recommendations to this point below:
- A beginning, a middle and an end is the core structure to any narrative, so don't just launch into the action! Even in a short three or four minute film, a three-act structure is essential to making a story coherent. Running, Man is an excellent example of this: In act one, Trevor shows purpose and direction looking over Blaine County from Mt. Chiliad. In act two, we have the core action of Trevor running and growing the beard. Act three is the pay off: Trevor's journey reaches a satisfactory conclusion, he looks across the ocean and turns back to keep running as the music kicks back in.
- Establishing shots are essential to setting the scene in your first act; a strong opening image can also imply the themes and action to come in a story. For some inspiration, check out El Serpe's remake of the House Of Cards opening titles. This remake is an excellent series of establishing shots that showcase all of the horror and the beauty of Los Santos.
- Use fades to show the passage of time. Instantly cutting from a character at one location, to the same character at another location can be jarring and imply that they warped or that there are two cloned characters. It's much better to show the character walking off-camera, followed by a fade-out, then a fade-in at a new location with the character there. (That said, John Hillcoat actually eschews fades in his opening establishing shots of John Marston crossing the deserts of West Elizabeth. However, notice how in three consecutive shots, Marston is in the same part of the frame and travelling left to right across the frame. In this way we see that he is on one continuous journey across a great distance.)
- The GTAV player cam has a deliberately wide field-of-view to aid gameplay, so the player can see more of what is happening around them. However, films often tend to use much tighter shots, whether to give a sense of more speed in action scenes like car chases (since objects are crossing the frame more quickly) or more intensity in close-up shots of actors' faces. Keep this in mind when framing your shots in free cam and use the Zoom feature to get the ideal field-of-view.
- The Rule of Thirds – an important technique not just in films but in all forms of visual art. Placing objects/actors of interest within one third of the image in line with imaginary intersections increases the attention drawn to them rather than just centering the view on them. Scenes tend to look cooler using this technique. Previously featured and mentioned in the initial Rockstar Editor Tips Series, Boris the Blade's Super Clown uses this technique well.
If you have any more tips for using the Rockstar Editor please feel free to share them in the comments section below. Alternatively, if you've made a video that illustrates any of these tips, or any of your own, you can also share those with the community below. And best of luck to everyone entering the contest to create the Official Music Video for “Leave” by Wavves. You've got until June 8th to submit your cinematic masterpiece for a shot at the custom G910 Orion Spark Gaming Keyboard and G510 Proteus Core Gaming Mouse, plus a prize pack of GTAV gear and a $100 Rockstar Warehouse gift card.
In our second selection of Rockstar Editor focused tips, we're honing in on how to use some of the Camera Effects and Soundtrack settings to your advantage. If you missed our initial write-up on Capturing Footage from last Friday, be sure to check that out, along with our Rockstar Editor tutorial guide on Social Club.
Experiment with different camera effects, but be sure to make the camera effect fit the action.
There are a wide array of camera effects that can really make your scene unique. We've highlighted just a few here, but take the time to play around with different effects to see what works for you. Once you've found the perfect combination, try to keep some consistency throughout your film - constantly shifting between different filters and styles will only disorientate the viewer, and might make your film seem unpolished.
Blends are an excellent cinematic tool, and only possible in the Rockstar Editor. There are a couple of options for Blends which you should be clear on: “Easing - Off” will move the camera the same speed through every frame of the blend, which you might want in a fast action scene with fast cuts to make the movements more sudden and jerky. On the other hand, "Easing - On" will increase and decrease camera speed as the camera moves in and out of the blend for more fluid movement. You also have a choice between Linear and Smooth Blend. A Linear Blend will move the camera directly between the Blend Markers so you know exactly where the camera will be and what will be in the frame when it reaches a Marker. A Smooth Blend will make the camera travel in a curve to go to the approximate positions of each Marker on your Blend, but there will be no sudden change of direction when it hits intermediate Markers.
If you find that during a Blend your subject matter goes out of frame, you can add in an extra Marker at the point where the subject is out of frame and use that to reposition the camera slightly (while editing in Free Cam). You can see a good example of how to do this in Olli43's tutorial video. For even more precision editing, try putting the scene in slow motion to nail down the perfect timestamp for your Marker.
Get to grips with the Depth of Field tools available; these allow you to draw the viewer’s eye by focusing on specific areas and blurring out others. Resist the temptation to overuse it though as it won’t have the same impact when used sparingly.
Score intensity changes can sound really epic, and when paired with the action in your film make the whole piece feel more cinematic. Note that Music intensity settings only work for scored instrumental tracks, but if you're editing to a track like "Leave" by "Wavves" (for the current Rockstar Editor contest), you may wish to raise and lower the volume to add extra weight to the scenes in your video. Have an action scene with explosions and gunfire? Crank up the SFX for that scene and drop down the music and dialogue. Silence can also be useful in places to catch the viewer's attention. Check out Spike Jonze' video for The Beastie Boys' "Don't Play No Game that I Can't Win" to see how music levels and sound effects really change the action.
For entrants to the contest, don’t forget to use the Skip To Beat function to make sure your editing keeps up with the beat. Timing a particular cut to match up with a change in music can have a dramatic effect on the punch of that edit.
