Rockstar Game Tips: Hunting Wildlife in Red Dead Redemption (Part 2)

Posted on July 19 2010, 5:23pm | Author: R* Y | Filed Under: Games, Social Club

Continuing our series on Hunting in Red Dead Redemption's epic open frontier, we've got a few more helpful tips as well as a guide on all of the Sharpshooter Challenges.

Be sure to check out our previously posted part one detailing Master Hunter Challenges as well.

When hunting animals in the game, use these tips to your advantage:
  • Some animals hunt in packs.  If you see one deer, elk, wolf, coyote or other animal, chances are that there will be others nearby.  Best to attack these on horseback so you don't lose one.  This doesn't apply to all animals.
  • Never stand still in any area in the game.  Cougars, wolves, coyotes, bears, etcetera could be around...they'll all attack you and have you dead in no time...
  • Shooting dogs will place a bounty on your head as all of the dogs belong to the law men.
  • If while hunting you encounter an ambient challenge where a man or woman is running away from a pack of wolves, coyotes or some other animal, save the person to get rewarded and hunt the animals at the same time for their parts. A twofer!
  • Tall Trees is home to some of the most majestic animals in the game.  Bears, elk, cougars, deer and more.  It's jam packed with hunting opportunity, if you've got the itch.
Sharpshooter Challenges for single player include the following:
  • Sharpshooter 1: Shoot and kill five flying wild birds.
  • Sharpshooter 2: Shoot and kill five rabbits.  Search for these around MacFarlane's Ranch and dry areas such as the land around Armadillo.
  • Sharpshooter 3: Kill five coyotes before any coyote causes damage to your health.  Check for coyotes around Hanging Rock north of Armadillo or on the hills surrounding MacFarlane's Ranch.
  • Sharpshooter 4: Kill five flying birds from a moving train.  The train is the red icon on your map.
  • Sharpshooter 5: Kill any two different types of wild animals in one Dead Eye meter.  This will unlock more ammunition at home and camp.
  • Sharpshooter 6: Shoot the hats off two different people's heads.  Use Dead Eye for this one at Twin Rocks, a hideout with enemies that have tall hats.
  • Sharpshooter 7: Kill 3 bears with a single head shot each.  Find these in Tall Trees.
  • Sharpshooter 8: Shoot the hats off two people's heads and disarm two people.  Again, Dead Eye is the key for this one.
  • Sharpshooter 9: Kill any six wild animals without reloading or changing weapons.  A good tip for this one is to go after vultures following successful completion of a gang hideout.
  • Sharpshooter 10: Disarm any six enemies without reloading or changing weapons.  One place to try for this is at the saloon in Thieves’ Landing, and be sure to use Dead Eye.  This challenge will unlock the ability for Dead Eye to build faster from shooting targets.

Animals roam over the entire land in the game.  The map included with your game copy shows where some of these creatures can be found, noted by drawings of the animals in the specific locations where they reside.  We'll be covering animal locations in part three of our Hunting Wildlife tips series, coming soon.  Comment below if you have any additional hunting tips or questions and we may answer them now or in a future edition of Asked & Answered.

COUGAR TIPS: easy strategy for MH5, find some cougars, their only form of attack is to come head on and claw you, but i find it easy to let them do that, its like jousting as soon as the cougar jumps in the air paw first you slice it with a knife, this will not hurt you, then finish it off anyway you want. (it takes 2 knife swings to kill a cougar),

When you are attempting the bounty achievements get a stagecoach and ride shotgun through the squares of Blackwater and shoot everything that moves. ***YOUR DRIVER SHOULD NOT GET A BOUNTY*** It makes it hard if he is getting shot and leaving you to fend for yourself. Make sure you go to an ammo camp and fill to the max first!

I'm trying to get Sharpshooter Level 10 (6 Disarms without reloading). When I go into dead-eye, the gun automatically reloads. Is there a way of stopping this.

There are endless cougars up in tall trees at the tanners lodge. You will die 5000 times trying to get out of there after you get your kills though lol.

Hey R* I was just wondering if the there really is a "I Shot the Sheriff Challange" and if you will release the marshall characters for the editor.

Okay, I'm having trouble finding the cougars in Single Player mode for the Master Hunter challenge that I have to kill 2 cougars with the knife. Where do they appear most often in Single Player?
                                        • Simple_Man_tmon July 20 2010, 10:04pmReply
Hey R*. I'm having a Social Club Problem. You see, I have already completed the game 100% and made it to Rank 50 in Free Roam & Competitive Modes. Now, just a couple days after achieving 100%, my 100% Checklist is at 0.0% & when I look at stats, it says I haven't even started the game at all. Also, when I look at my "Your Place In The World" section it says 0 Multiplayer XP, that I'm at Rank 1, and under the SP stats, it says 0.0% Game Completed & 00:00:00 total game time played. Heck, EVERYTHING IN THE 100% Checklist is GONE.
                                          Can you fix this problem?
                                          Than You & Good Day.

P.S.- Great Game! I'll buy any buy worthy DLC's. Have a great day.
