Rockstar Game Tips: Free Roam Challenges Part 1 (Hunting & Sharpshooting)

Posted on June 17 2010, 11:10am | Author: R* Y | Filed Under: Games, Social Club

Red Dead Redemption's multiplayer Free Roam offers a vast open landscape with five different challenge categories: Sharpshooter, Hunter, Survivalist, Lawbringer and Outlaw.  Keeping track of your Free Roam Challenges is as simple as pausing the game, choosing 'Journal' and then 'Free Roam'.

Today, we present part one of a series of tips on ways to conquer the Free Roam challenges, starting off with Sharpshooter and Hunter:

  • Sharpshooter I
    • Shoot and kill five flying birds to earn 250 XP and the title Bird Watcher.
      • Tip: Enter an open grassy area such as Hennigan's Stead.  Fire off a shot to see and hear if any birds are nearby.

    • Shoot and kill five rabbits to earn 250 XP and the title Exterminator.
      • Tip: Search around MacFarlane's Ranch for these critters.

    • Get ten head shots on enemy AI to get 250 XP and the title Head Hollower.
      • Tip: Go to a Gang Hideout such as Twin Rocks and use the Rolling Block Rifle or the Carcano Rifle. Enemies will take defensive positions and allow you to easily pick them off.

    • Shoot ten guns out of enemies' hands to earn 250 XP and the title Sharpshooter.
      • Tip: Target enemy gun hands with Dead Eye.

  • Sharpshooter II
    • Shoot two hats off of two different people's heads within five seconds of each other to earn 250 XP and the title Hat Trickster.
      • Tip: Head to a Gang Hideout where the enemies have large hats such as Twin Rocks.  Use Dead Eye for accuracy.

    • Shoot someone's hat off and shoot the gun out of someone's hand within three seconds of each other to earn 250 XP and the title Hauty Gunhand.
      • Tip: Use Dead Eye to mark the top of an enemy's hat or the gun. You do not have to shoot the gun and hat off the same person. These can be done separately, and neither has to be done in a duel.

    • Kill a grizzly bear with a single head shot to earn 250 XP and the title Bear Starer.
      • Tip: Find grizzly bears in Tall Trees north of Manzanita Post.  Use a weapon such as the Semi-Auto Shotgun at close range.

    • Shoot a hat off someone while riding a mount to earn 250 XP and the title Hat Flyer.
      • Tip: A Gang Hideout such as Tesoro Azul has enemies with larger hats that are easier to target and shoot.

    • Kill any three different types of wild animals within ten seconds of each other to earn 250 XP and the title Master Sharpshooter.
      • Tip: Tall Trees is where you'll find an abundance of wildlife: wild boars, elk, bears, bighorns, deer and foxes.

  • Hunter I
    • Kill five deer to earn 250 XP and the title Stew Brewer.
      • Tip: Deer can be found in the northern section of Tall Trees, Gaptooth Ridge, south of Roca de Madera in Diez Coronas as well as many other places.

    • Kill five coyotes to earn 250 XP and the title Conservationist.
      • Tip: Ride around the outskirts of Armadillo and listen for the sounds of the coyotes.

    • Kill five wolves (one must be with a knife) to earn 250 XP and the title Wolf Cryer.
      • Tip: Wolves can be found in several places.  Some of them are Torquemada, Rio del Lobo, north of Ridgewood Farm and north of Chuparosa.

    • Kill five cougars (one must be with a knife) to earn 250 XP and the title The Mauled.
      • Tip: Look in Gaptooth Ridge or Rio Bravo.

    • Kill five elk and five bighorn to earn 250 XP and the title Hunter.
      • Tip: The northernmost area of Tall Trees is your best bet for finding elk and bighorn.

  • Hunter II
    • Kill five bears (one must be with a knife) to earn 250 XP and the title Spartan Survival.
      • Tip: The northern and snowy section of Tall Trees is where you'll find the bears.

    • Find and kill a unique named wolf to earn 250 XP and the title Lycanthropist.
      • Tip: Lobo the wolf is located in Barranca just southeast of Chuparosa.

    • Find and kill a unique named giant boar to earn 250 XP and the title Lord of the Flies.
      • Tip: Gordo the boar is located in Greenhollow on the New Austin side of the border opposite El Presidio.

    • Find and kill a unique named giant jaguar to earn 250 XP and the title Cat Ballyhoo.
      • Tip: Khan the jaguar is located in Tanner’s Reach, west of Manzanita Post and south of Aurora Basin.

    • Find and kill a unique named giant bear to earn 250 XP and the title Master Hunter.
      • Tip: Brumas the bear is located in the Southern section of Tall Trees at Bearclaw Camp.

If you've got any of your own personal tips and experiences about the Hunter or Sharpshooter challenges, give us a shout in the comments, and look for part two of this series coming soon.

A great way to disarm or to shoot the hat of an enemy is to use a shotgun at medium range since the shotgun sucks at a longer range.

They'll probably release xp for hunting (or those hunting grounds someone else mentioned) as DLC.

XP for hunting would be great! At least a point, you get that from killing random people. What makes hunting game any different?

yup i agree xp for killing animals is logical. im also bummed theres not a hunter rank 3, 4, 5...to infinity. if theres one thing about this game i absolutely love and think you guys got almost perfect is the hunting aspect. i think you created the best hunting game ever made. hunting from horseback rocks! unfortunately you get almost no tangible rewards for doing it in single player or multiplayer. after you complete these challenges which i did almost immediately , theres no reason to hunt whatsoever. the multiplayer free roam world feels very dead now to me. pretty much just a huge useless wastland. i play single player and i cant resist hunting even when im suppose to be doing something else. i think having to find and skin your animals to get the xp in MP would be important to have the feel of actual hunting. i cant really get into just riding from gang hideout to gang hideout all day long. so boring after 2 or 3 sessions to try to level up your xp. was amazed animals give you no xp when i first started

two tips- when doing the hunter II jaguar khan, go on a rock and camp it out. Also with the bear, just hide in a
house and they will just line up at the door

hey rockstar! I totally live all the online/freeroam challenges, but for some reason my sharpshooter 2 rank 2 won't register. I've done this many times and I want to know what's up. Thanks!

I just want to say I am so glad you can go into a private free roam alone or with friends. It is so freakin annoying trying to complete a challenge and some jack*** comes up and shoots you so he can get his precious 10xp.

@Rockstar, I can't seem to get the Hat Flier title or challenge complete. I unlocked the challenge, I ride my mount and get the hat shot with the points for a hat shot but I don't get the challenge complete; what am i doing wrong?; or is this a glitched challenge.
                          • laZardoon June 21 2010, 10:57amReply
Master Hunter I (Level 5)'s challenge is five elk AND five Bighorn, both of which can be found in Tall Trees.

                            Just pointin that out. :D

I know I wish you could get xp from hunting to. Sometimes I just get side tracked in free roam and find myself hunting animals for the fun of it, even though there's no point.

I agree with eggward, you should get xp for killing animals. That would make sense, you can be killed by them without knowing what hit you!

For the challenge where you have to kill any three different types of wild animals within ten seconds of each other, a good tactic is to go out in the open landscapes, where there are birds for example the big open area between Chuparosa and Casa Madrugada, where you'll often find a both a rabbit and an armadillo running around together. So once you find those two animals, make sure there are some crows, hawks or vultures above you, which you'll then quickly kill after you've killed the animals on land (of cause using Dead Eye will help you in this situation)

btw (while hoping not to get too off-topic) on the article about the new Social Club Challenge in Gaptooth Breach, a guy had a little complaint about the cheat system, and more specifically about the fact, that you can't save after activating the cheats, and he said that you should be able to use the cheats as a help (probably in the missions)
Now first I'm not into this whole "using cheats in tough missions so that you can complete them thing" but I think that we should be able to activate some of the cheats, especially those gained from the first two SCC (Social Club Challenges) while being able to safe afterwards, since they don't really help you out as much as they make it tougher for you (talking about "Every Shot Counts") and they would just give us more game play. There's also the cheat that turns the screen from colored into sephia tone which I most definitely think should be useable without locking neither the safe option nor the trophies/achievements

I mean you get 1 xp for killing an innocent, defenceless civilian but none for killing a boar, cougar or bear who will kill you even when unprovoked?
                                        • eggwardon June 18 2010, 6:50amReply
@abdogg209 get a buggy or stagecoach. set a route on the map and then pull your aim button and the vehicle will follow the route leaving you free to shoot birds.

Hunting is great fun! I agree with Dilfmaster it would be great if you got xp for hunting. I ended up killing a pack of 20 bears and 30 wolves in the same session and it wouldve been nice to get some xp for surviving. In fact on page 7 of the manual it says the multiplayer hunting areas give you xp for surviving waves of animals but I havent experienced that even though I seemed to reach the end of the waves.

And any chance of some more legendary animals?
