Western Weaponry of the Early 20th Century (The True West - History that Helped Inspire Red Dead Redemption)

(While the Gatling Gun is certainly one of the most powerful and exciting weapons of the West in Red Dead Redemption, it was actually a half-century old technology at the time the game takes place.)

Many advances spurred the end of the rustic American frontier era and the beginning of the modern 20th century, but no component proved to be more significant in the decades that led up to World War I than the explosion of technology and innovation in the field of weaponry.  Industrialization, and with it the mass-manufacturing and parts-standardization of millions of firearms, reduced demand for local gunsmiths and their meticulous craftsmanship, and relegated them to mostly sales and maintenance.  As with the parts comprising the firearms themselves, the ammunition they used also became standardized, and more efficient “smokeless” gunpowder replaced the black gunpowder in the bullets fired.

Following the historic carnage of the US Civil War, and with it, the demand for faster and more effective ways to kill, American inventors like Dr. Richard J. Gatling, John Moses Browning, and expatriates Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim and Benjamin Hotchkiss also began experimenting with the mechanisms by which weapons were loaded.  It wasn’t long before a wave of self-loading weapons began revolutionizing firearms.  Unlike the comparatively slow shoot-recoil-reload cycle of most older weapons, these new semi-automatic and automatic weapons allowed users to fire and reload multiple rounds with frightening speed and ease.

John Marston’s skill with a revolver may have kept him alive (or “above snakes,” as the saying went in the Wild West) for many years; but the following guns were fairly new on the scene at the time of Red Dead Redemption, and they offer Marston some exciting and deadly new tools in his arsenal to work with in his quest to tame the West...

Semi-automatic pistol (inspired by the BorchardtC93) - The granddaddy of self-loading pistols, this revolutionary German-produced handgun was the first semi-auto to see significant mass-production. Very costly to make, much less purchase, and with a kick like a mule, gunslingers at the time still couldn’t resist the attraction of its amazing self-feeding mechanism that enabled it to fire in rapid succession.

Mauser pistol (inspired by the Mauser C96) – Its distinctive box magazine in front of the trigger and even more unique wooden walnut handle (earning it the nickname the “broom handle”) only partly explains why this pistol acquired such cachet as an elite and exotic firearm.  The power and penetration of its 7.63mm rounds went unrivalled for decades, and its range was excellent as well. Winston Churchill was among this pistol’s many loyal fans.

High power pistol (inspired by the Browning M1903) - This key forerunner of the modern semi-automatic pistol was designed by legendary gunmaker John Browning for military purposes and became very popular for civilian-self defense (and with outlaws) due to its accuracy, light weight, quick reload and most of all reliability, as soldiers from Belgium, Holland and Sweden to Turkey, Russia and the US could attest.

Bolt-action rifle (inspired by the Krag Jorgensen) – Invented in Norway, this weapon won a competition held by the US Military on New York’s Governors Island and beat out several dozen competitors, including domestic weapons manufacturers who howled in protest.  Among its attractive features was its improvement upon the standard top-loading rifle models of the time - the bolt-action loaded rounds much more quickly, smoothly and efficiently.

(Left: Marston takes aim with the bolt-action rifle based on the Krag Jorgensen.  Right: US troops fight from the trenches using the Krag Jorgensen during the Philippine-American War in 1899. [Wikimedia Commons])

Pump-action shotgun (inspired by the Winchester M1897 – aka “the ol’ ‘97”) – A classic of American firearms, the pump-action shotgun surpassed its predecessors with an easily removable barrel (for those preferring varying lengths), a slide lock that greatly reduced misfires and jams, and an overall sturdier frame. Nearly a million such rifles were produced during the first half of the 20th century.

Browning Machine Gun
(inspired by the Browning M1917 prototype) - Invented in 1890 by John Moses Browning, and ultimately with later models becoming a fixture of World War I combat – the Browning Machine Gun is a water-cooled, recoil-operated, fully automatic piece of bullet-firing mayhem; and one of the most cutting-edge, rare and indeed deadly of all the weapons John Marston lays his trigger finger on.

I would love to see the 1858 Remington in-game. :P
Also. I wonder why R* didn't aff the shotgun to the LeMat in-game. LeMat has two barrels, one for the revolver, and one for the shotgun. I've read about it , and thought it was quite interesting. The tip of the hammer could be rotated downwards, to hit the cap for the shotgun rounds.

i recall from my old wargaming days , some bullets kill by penetration power. ie how deep they go , and otheres by blunt inpact trauma.

a fast small bullet will destroy organs that it directly impacts but a large slow bullet that causes a shock wave in the body when it hits wont penetrate far, but any organs close enough and covred by the shock wavew will be destroyed.

i know this is a little too detailed for current games but maybe futrue games a 3d model of the bodies organs and different penetration inpact force might be cool for them.

                        @ alpha

just stay on your horse, and sort of move at a trot away from them. also the kill wolves with a knife, kill like 1st 3 or 4 of a pack then hop of hourse and knife the last guy. rinse and repeat, now knifing bears is a different story.

really cool article...but i agree with a few other posters...we want a full weaponology 101 of all the guns in the game. I'm guessing the high-power pistol is really a Colt M1911A1 since the game is set in 1911, but i'd like to know for sure. also I think a whole thread on REAL WEST v.s. R* WEST would be cool, not just weapon history

@MetalMeek @Shriddek and all - thanks guys - look for more research posts soon! Working on some other interesting tidbits to share with you all

@9766042 Thank you for your comment - very insightful! FYI we referred to him as an 'expatriate' because he was indeed a Maine native, but lived overseas in Europe. But yes, so many interesting stories from this era of the early 20th century leading into WWI...

I just looked at the news letter a little closer and i just noticed that you allready wrote about the high power pistol, sorry about that
                                  • MetalMeekon June 10 2010, 12:23pmReply
I think the Mauser C96 is the most bad ass pistol ever invented. Thank you Rockstar for telling a little bit about the weapons history, it would be really cool if you did it again with some of the other weapons to like the high power pistol or the double action revolver etc.
Anyways this news letter was really cool and i hope you can do something like it again.

PS: @DJ-Playapie i totally agree with you about the story and some off the bugs.

Thanks for this article. Explaining the history that goes with the game should help to bring in even more players. Knowing that there is fact behind the game helps draw me in....as opposed to "futuristic" alien games with soap-opera-esque story lines built in (I'm looking at you, HALO). It may also help the younger group whose knowledge of history doesn't span much beyond the first season of the Hills......when Heidi wasn't a porn queen. But in particular, I love that you added Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim to the discussion, though you do describe him as an “expatriate”. He was born in my hometown, Sangerville, Maine (I dare anyone to find that on a map or not get lost using Tom Tom) and was rumored to have tested many of his inventions out on his sprawling farm land (including early dynamite, fireworks, and the Maxim machine gun) there. He never received the national fame due to his automatic gun not being selected by the US government for war time issues (can you say early political corruption and influence?) thanks to Browning and Gatlin. In fact, his weapon probably killed more Americans than it saved due to its limited use by the Germans. Either way, thanks for the refresher and maybe we’ll see the Maxim machine gun in future installments of the game when a Marston kin travels up North and has a “Stranger” encounter with some “whack scientist” whose testing his “repeater gun” in the hidden fields of Maine!

Thanks you for finally updating the article R*. A friend of mine and I pointed out that the Krag was invented in Norway, when the article first came out. And thank you DJ-PlayaPie for also pointing this out.
