Rockstar Game Tips: Utilizing the Weapons and Loadout Items in Hostage Negotiation and Painful Memories

Posted on January 3 2013, 12:00am | Author: R* K | Filed Under: Games

Now that both the Max Payne 3 Hostage Negotiation and Painful Memories DLC packs are out in the wild (get the full lowdown here and here in case you missed them) we've been checking out how the best players in the community use the new Bursts, weapons and Loadout Items to their advantage. Taking this into account, along with input from the top players at our dev studios, here's our tips on how to make the most of your arsenal.

The M24 is the first bolt-action sniper rifle in the game and provides impressive stopping power at long range for those accurate enough to wield it. We recommend equipping the Supressor to mask its distinctive sound and protect your position, even though that slightly impairs the range.

The IA2 AR is one of the most powerful and accurate assault rifles in Max Payne 3 multiplayer, and it's best used to keep enemies at bay from around mid-range. While it's fire rate means it not as efficient up-close, you may want to consider a punchy side-arm like the Sawn-off or the 608 Bull for those intimate encounters.

The UAR-21 is a good all-round assault rifle with a particularly fearsome fire rate that makes it more effective up close than some others. However, that does mean you're going to get through plenty of ammunition so we recommend adding the Extended Mag attachment, along with the Barrel Upgrade and Gas Systems kit if you can spare the Loadout weight.

Highly accurate across mid to long-range and with plenty of ammunition in reserve, the IMG 5.56 is a solid choice for those large, open maps like Canal De Panamá and New Jersey Cemetery.

The Explosives Burst provides plenty of bang for your buck at all three levels, with the following benefits:

Picking up sizeable multikills at Level 3 is all about positioning, as enemies will only drop explosives if you can see them when you activate the Burst. A smart player will use this to get an intimate round of Last Man Standing off to a devastating start, or to take out an entire enemy team as they cluster to take a checkpoint, in Gang Wars. If you're playing Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch, try finding a high vantage point, such as the helipad on the Rooftop of the Moderno, to broaden your view of the battlefield.

At Level 2, the Explosives Burst grants ammunition that deals explosive damage as well as the damage inflicted by the bullet itself. The resulting splash damage makes it a formidable crowd controller, so look you use it when enemies are cramped together in tight spots, or have been funneled into a bottleneck.

At Level 1 you can booby trap all existing bodies for the opposing team, so think of it as sweet revenge whenever your team has suffered a sudden loss, perhaps following a hostile Level 3 Weapon Double-Dealer.

The Hangover Burst leaves your enemies with that morning-after-the-night-before feeling, impairing the vision, health and Adrenaline of the next six opponents that spawn. The precise effects are as follows:

It's hard to think of a situation where this won't come in useful, but we'd especially advise using it whenever you and your Crew are adjusting to a defensive position, such as while planting a bomb or capturing a crucial checkpoint.

The Heavy Helmet is well worth considering for any heavier Loadouts you roll with: it provides 75% protection against head damage and is only slightly heavier than the standard Helmet.

The Bomb Suit offers superior protection against ballistic and explosive damage but that comes at cost, as it is also one of the heaviest Loadout options. As the name suggests, it's extremely effective for those times when the frags are flying, like when planting bombs or claiming heavily-guarded checkpoints, and it also offers sturdy protection against players partial to an RPG.

The Intimidation Mask strikes fear to the heart of any enemy inside your field of vision (within 10 meters) and increases the time it takes for them to reload their weapons - an effective antidote any time you find yourself against players wielding the Sawn-Off.

Sick of your Crew mates popping that decisive shot into an enemy when you've already done most of the dirty work? The Calculator will grant you a kill for every two assists. A good way to see if you should be equipping this or not is to check through your match reports at the Rockstar Social Club. If your assists count is around 50% of your kill count or above, then you should be equipping it in your Loadout.

The Hip Flask serves a dual role: not only does it counter the effects of the Hangover Burst (what makes you bad makes you better) it also protects you from a single sniper rifle round. It's a good item to equip in those situations where you're most susceptible from range, such as when planting a bomb or trying to survive assassination in Gang Wars.

The Betting Slip is a great way to earn cash and should boost the coffers for when you hit levels 20 and 40 and there's more hardware on offer than your pockets allow.

Now that you've had some time to test out these Loadout Items, as well as the new maps in the Hostage Negotiation and Painful Memories packs, let us know in the comments if you've any fresh strategies of your own.

Anyone else missing an entire faction of avatars since downloading the new DLC? I cannot see the Filhos anywhere and I've tried re-downloading the DLC packs, but MP3 won't recognise that they're installed on the MP3 PSN menu section (though DeMarcos abroad etc do show up in game).

Also, I'm still seeing the Day of the Dead mask constantly showing up as 'new'.

I purchased MP3 for XBOX360 right after release and like it nearly as the other game titles by R*, but multiplayer was a bit annoying... Even though I reached Legend Level 5 and now I purchased it again (on PC) to start all over again! That is a huge difference! Better graphics, more options and less lag in the multiplayer, so for me it worth it to buy it twice! Would be nice though if I could take over my progress from the XBOX, but anyway it's fun to play!

Only thing is the usage of extended Auto 9 mm in dual wield or the IMG. In my opinion it*s quite disrespectful, because these guns are overpowered and do not allow a skilled gamer to fight these weapons...

Hi Rockstar, i'm a dedicated fans of your games and i really appreciate how hard you guys work on every game and deliver everytime! Not many companies these days create such amazing titles like Rockstar. But here's the thing, the DLC for Max Payne 3 is overpriced. I'm sorry to sound negative but i truly believe that making 11 maps for money is not fair for gamers that can't buy DLC due to financial reasons. I honestly believe that more players would be playing the multiplayer of Max Payne if there were atleast 12 maps available for FREE. I wish u guys can refund the rockstar passes and DLC and just release everything for free and show that you guys truly care about the devoted Max Payne fans. Don't get me wrong, u guys have supported us through and through but the DLC prices were a big mistake from u guys. I hope GTA 5 doesn't do the same mistake. Anyways, keep the great work up :)

@Garboom I can't but agree with all you have said but. My Issue is not the cost its a game that is broken for online play. My game in the online play most of the time I can only kill 0 to 5 people if that and not all players also not all my guns even work and I paid for this. Rock Star support jest tells me we don't know when a fix will be available for the issues. Plus I have had support tickets jest sit there for months and months with no replays. And this dose not count all the other issues like games not starting or host loss and so on. So for me its a waist of time on most cases to even play the game online. And its purity bad when I can play games like Resident evil 6 for weeks online with other players and have not even one issue on line. So in my personal opinion the online is emptying out because of Rock Stars frailer to support there customer's and the game....

@Marks.. I'm sorry to hear that buddy, i hope these issues with the online play that you're having will be fixed. Yesterday, me and my brother wanted to play gang wars together but it wasnt letting us get inside the matches :S everything else was fine but we realised in the end that my brother's connection was the reason behind the problem. If ur connection is fine, then that is unfortunate to hear. Listen, i love this game, not for the multiplayer, but for the amazing single player campaign. I know the multiplayer could've been better in terms of stability and FREE DLC (wink wink Rockstar), but look at it this way, atleast u got a chance to experience the single player campaign. Take care buddy :)

@Garboom Hey mate, we're sorry you feel that way but we do always strive to provide the most top quality content at the fairest pricing possible. We feel that the Max DLC packs have a great value between the multiplayer maps, weapons, Items, and everything else in them. Stay tuned for info on the forthcoming modes pack which we hope you'll be into too. As for your request for free content, we did of course release a free Pack (Disorganized Crime: http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/44141/the-free-disorganized-crime-pack-for-max-payne-3-is-now-availabl.html) in the late summer - but it's unrealistic to think that we could produce and release all DLC for free - after all, design, development and production of this content does cost a lot to create.
@Agent_Death Sorry also to hear about technical issues you've had - we presume you've got the latest Title Updates installed and contacted Support? We want to do all we can to make sure folks like yourself have a smooth experience. Another Title Update is on the way soon to address reported issues and in preparation for the modes pack. Thank you.

@ I understand about the cost of developing the game and how expensive it can be, especially when developing a beautifully looking game like Max Panye 3. I just wish the prices were a bit lower than $10 and say 6 or 5 dollars because not much people are buying multiplayer DLC these days, whether from this game or another game. The financial situations of the general population isn't as good as it was before, and as a result, people are being very tight with their budget. 60 dollars for a game is alot for an average gamer and i truly believe that DLC can be a burden to those who are spending enough on the game itself, unless they are game expansions like Ballad of Gay Tony which was amazing. Ofcourse Free DLC is wishful thinking on my part and unrealistic but u have to understand that lowering the prices for DLC, especially if they are for multiplayer will be beneficial for the company and for the multiplayer devotees like myself. I truly love the multiplayer, don't get me wrong. It's refreshing and unique and i applaud that. But again, the lower the prices are, the better for everyone. Thanks for replying to us and good luck with the release of GTA 5 =)

Why didn't Max Payne shave his beard off? He shaved his head why not his beard? I still dont get it.
              • Garboomon January 6 2013, 8:35amReplyFlag
@micyficy From my experiences, men don't like shaving their beard if they're in a similar mind-state that Max Payne had. I believe Max shaved his head because he was frustrated from feeling like a train wreck and f**king up alot of the times, so he just shaved his head out of impulse. It's such an amazing portrait of a man who lost his family and forgot what his purpose of living is. This is why i love Max Payne 3 campaign because its beautifully written and the characterization of Max is realistic and heartbreaking, u just can't help but feel sorry for him at times. Max Payne is one of my favourite anti-heroes ever and i'm glad rockstar made Max Payne 3. I'm really hoping they make the 4th one on the ps4 and xbox 720 :)

@micyficy I shave my head in RL but not the beard, plus I am nearly 40 years old... I think having no hair in the face while being bald look kind of odd. That might answer your question?

@mattyg892 exactly, so true. Max Payne 3 is truly a game for mature audiences. I applaud Rockstar for going towards this direction for all their games (eg: GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, etc) in this current generation of consoles

Dear Rockstar, can I report something I think could be improved in the feuding system and which you're probably already aware of. Now when a team quits during feuding, they lose the feud. This is good. But sometimes, a team disconnects by network problems, freeze or bugs, and they artificially lose feud. This is bad. In our crew we "really" lost only 1 feud, but the stats incorrectly say we lost 6 because there were 5 cases where either one of us lagged out, game froze, or there was a bug like opponents disconnecting but still feud lost to us (case happened today: we won 6 feuds but system says we won 5 and lost 1, but we even not freeze nor disconnect, it was other team quitting, thus wtf moment when we saw the stats). These bugs are somewhat "fair" as all crews are affected by them (though I suspect some are more if they have bad network), but I think it is maybe possible that your software could try to better recognize the real reason of a crew quitting and avoid some of these issues. I understand this could be a hard problem to solve but it seems worth some thinking and improvement in the future, as it is soo frustrating to lose feuds in this way :-) Thanks so much for reading this!

Just have the guns conform to their real life specs and attributes when they have standard ammo. Dont wash it down or "balance" it. Plenty of FPS's modify their weapons unrealistically so they are beyond recognition. Dont follow their footsteps R*. One shot to the head is a kill. A shot in the abdomen/torso is a kill if not a bleed to death. A shot to the leg is immobility.
              • Sleazy_Smoothon January 5 2013, 10:50pmReplyFlag
@southparkmayor I agree with the head shot, but that's about it... Being immobilized from one shot in the leg online or being killed by one shot to the chest would'nt be fun at all..
              • Marks..on January 6 2013, 12:34pmReplyFlag
@Sleazy_Smooth I would say one shot to the heads dead on. But my stuff dose not work right so I don't no about you but I've jest about emptied a gun clip on some ones head and they jest turn around and one shot to my chest and I'm dead. So the chest should be a bleeding issue with one shot but with 5 or 20 then yes your dead. All leg and arm's should be a immobility issue. But this games is so broken I've stood on a leg in the map with the helicopter and had a player kill me from 4 to10 feet away swiping his gun at my feet. I would be happy if Rock Star would jest fix the game to begin with but I like your Idea's.

@southparkmayor You guys should play hardcore. I wish there was a mode of play with no health regeneration, more realistic wounds, and no radar, but with soft lock. I suppose I should just play more hardcore.

This game is in need of a serious update. Its been getting worse and worse everyday and it was just off the wall last night. I dont even want to hear crap that its my connection either, its not. I talked to a few friends, a few veterans I see all the time, and a few total strangers and everyone was seeing and saying the same things. All of my other games work great online. MP3 is just a nightmare right now.

@EDZO82 I agree. It's the only game I've ever had freeze and crash on me. Really if there's going to be a game that sends my ps3 to the grave it will be this game. I have to improperly shut down my ps3 nearly everytime I play due to freezing, and the other technical issues just make the rest of the experience frustrating.

I just hope gta 5 won't have this many issues.. but I think it will. Imagine an open world online with 15 other people... this game has countless bugs and technical errors and we're limited to closed and controlled maps.

@Sleazy_Smooth I think R* should give us an offline multiplayer with AI. There are a lot of avatars with different faces and names and outfits, its totally do-able. No server crashes, no lag, no glitches, no cheaters, no going into a match with 1 min left, no dealing with the same people you cant stand etc etc. I really wish and hope for this in the future. R* yall know me, I'm a straight-up defender of the IMG 5.56 but the truth is that for it to even be competetively effective a player must level it up to 10 and equip every single attachment available, then STILL lead all their shots and land 3-to-4 total bursts, center mass. It's an effective support gun, there's really no good way to win w/ it...

@BobbyGonda Not every body's IMG gun works right. My IMG gun and I have it on video standing three feet from a players head jest pulling the trigger over and over till the other player jest stands up and kills me. And this was not the first time or same player it jest dose not work right. I had a game in the Bronco building where a enemy player and I tested are guns. He would pull the trigger once at the same feet away and kill me my gun did not even move his health bar. And Rock Star has done nothing to fix it and most likely never will....

Hangover Burst is pretty interesting and original; I like the swaying effect. What's next, a Withdrawal Burst where symptoms get progressively worse until you pop a pain killer?
