Interviews with Rockstar: Looking Back for Vice City's 10th Anniversary

Posted on December 13 2012, 10:40am | Author: R* S | Filed Under: Games

As part of the celebration for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's 10th anniversary, the team at Rockstar North took a look back at the creation of the game with a series of interviews across the web.  Head over to Digital Trends, Crave Online and to read all about Rockstar North's personal experiences in developing the Grand Theft Auto game that - only one year removed from the launch of Grand Theft Auto III - tipped the series from a groundbreaking new game experience to a full-on cultural phenomenon. Here's an excerpt from Crave Online's interview with Rockstar North Art Director, Aaron Garbut:
“For Vice City, there were a lot of moments that just clicked. When we first blocked in the map and drove about it for the first time; when we put in the helicopters and flew over the city; seeing the dancers in the club; driving down Ocean Drive at night; putting in the hardware store for all the less conventional weapon; the first time we had the player change clothes; driving over ramps in boats; smashing up a car with a hammer for the first time; being chased by golfers as I ran off in their golf cart; seeing the models of Love Fist for the first time; driving around on a moped the day they went in… It’s 10 years ago but these and so many other moments are still clear. It’s fantastic seeing a game evolve, especially when it happens quickly. Seeing everything click into place, having the opportunity to poke and prod it, try things out and learn from it all. Tiny things can be seminal moments.”

      |Rockstar Games , If you at all read this , maybe you would release gta 3 and vice city WITH achievements like 400G or release both games with 800G idk but we need these :) x
achievements do not matter but even simple ones like , complete gta 3 - 100G and beat vice city 100G and then the last 800 could be like : Get All Packages 50G in VC and %)G for III Then 100G for Getting All Packages in Both , then Unlock All Islands on both games 50G :D EPIC , LOVE YOU GUYS , YOUR MY CHILDHOOD

          @SummerlyCorgi7 You noob.

Vice City was released at 2002 and R* started making it in Feb 2001 and took only 9 months to complete the game if it was released in 2000 then, vice city 10 yr anniversary was being at 2010. 1014454829

Loving the games on Android and looking forward to (/hoping for) San Andreas, LC and VC Stories.
Also, as someone said above, a mash up of all three classic maps in one would be a dream. A new character meeting the king of each town(Mute, Tommy and CJ) and working for them. Now that would be more exciting than GTAV!

That looks like a screenshot out of a PS Vita, I wish.

Anyone else miss the 'classic' GTA Huds that were in the III Era?
            • Shooting-Spreeon December 13 2012, 11:45pmReplyFlag
@VinewoodTits While they fit in really well with the cartooney nature of the III era, I was relieved to see the streamlined, translucent HUD in GTA IV. I don't miss the old HUD.
            • Gleisneron December 14 2012, 2:30amReplyFlag
@VinewoodTits Well I'm sort of with both of you. I do hope they have made plenty of changes between GTA IV and GTA V, because in IV there was some parts of the HUD that I really didn't like, I can't quite put my finger on it though. So something entirely new, made up from parts of the old would be really awesome. Like possibilities to choose between the map-circular-healthbar, and the classic one. And also choose if and when the weapon icon disappear.

I have gta vice city on my ipad mini.
It was my favorite when i was 15, playing it again with improved hd graphics (the water is beautifull) brings back those times from when i came back from school and played vice city 10 years ago!
It runs perfect on the ipad mini, and i even sold my ps vita today because the ipad mini is so much more fun and especially with this game! so i hope in the future you guys bring gta san andreas to ios.
To all people at rockstar games: thanks and keep up the good work

Love the fact that Sam Houser watches Miami Vice and even TiVo's it. Haha
If none of you have seen at least one episode from Miami Vice than you have no taste in 'good' TV Shows. Which is sadly missing in today's society with crap shows like Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, et cetera... I mean, what the hell? There will NEVER be a show like Vice EVER AGAIN in our existance. Period

@VinewoodTits Did you actually watch it in the 80's or you watched it in modern times?
                • VinewoodTitson December 13 2012, 9:30pmReplyFlag
@BudgetCross In the 80's man every Friday night on NBC at 10:00. If you ever missed an episode of anything really back then on TV then you would miss out but if you had a blank tape you could've recorded stuff from the TV to your VHS. Good ol' days! Ha

"Of course at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas, and in that context reimagining Vice City would be very interesting."

Can't believe Leslie said this! :)

When i bought San Andreas i was a kid, so i prefer it to Vice City, but i'm sure that if i had been older, Vice City would have been my favorite GTA!

@R* guys any plans for an Ask And Answered on Vice City, like the one you did for GTA III last year, that would be very nice to see

Was reading one of the interviews and it seems that Sam Houser was a big fan of Miami Vice. Speaking of Miami Vice here is a vid that gives you that 'Vice City' feel to it. (The black guy with the beard is Philip Michael Thomas) AKA 'Lance Vance'

Imagine if GTA VI is set in a modern day Vice City? All complete with the City, Beaches, Everglades out of the town, and Bahamas! Bahamas are located 60 miles from the real life Miami but you know Rockstar would make it closer in a fictional world. I'm dreaming now... lol

Where do we send severe glitch reports that they can be reviewed?

                          1. The Avery 'Demolition' mission is impossible to complete because 2 missions overlap on top of eachother, causing 2 helicopters and so forth. Suddenly the mission fails.

                          2. While flying the helicopter, the mission fades and says the helicopter crashed eventhough it didn't.

                          3. characters, vehicles, etc constantly go transparent when the light hits them. often the people are ghosts in the cutscenes.
