Check It Out: A Bruceploitation Lowlight Reel

Posted on February 7 2012, 12:00pm | Author: R* A | Filed Under: Rockstar

We recently highlighted John Woo’s “The Killer” as a particularly inspirational gem from the world of Hong Kong action cinema – today, we present the yang to that yin, some of our favorite guilty pleasures from the realm of ‘Bruceploitation’.
In 1973 when the legendary Bruce Lee passed, an entire industry of martial arts filmmaking coalesced around the void left by his untimely death, attempting to capitalize on the style and substance of the great artist - invariably failing miserably but producing a very surreal genre of opportunistic cult films and helping to reinforce that there was truly only one Bruce.
Check out this selection of trailers from just a few of the unbelievable imposter films that confused and often infuriated a generation of Bruce fans.

Bruce Li and Larry Lee in "Bruce Li in New Guinea" (1978)

Note they even intentionally misspelled his name as "Lee" in the title screen towards the end. Awesome unexpected usage of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" in this.

Bruce Le in "Enter the Game of Death" (1978)

Gunning for the distinction of most shameless amidst a genre predicated on shamelessness - distributors of this one morphed the titles of two of (the real) Bruce Lee's most famous films "Enter the Dragon" and "Game of Death". Check out Le's replica Bruce Lee yellow-and-black tracksuit and the jacked-up-Michael-Winslow-looking villain he fights here.

Dragon Lee, Bruce Le, Bruce Thai and Bruce Lai (!) in "The Clones of Bruce Lee" (1981)

A self-aware holy grail of the genre, regarded as 'The Mount Rushmore of Bruceploitation Films.'
"These identical specimens of the late Bruce Lee are trained in all the martial arts through scientific technique."

Sammo Hung in "Enter the Fat Dragon" (1978)

Really. One of the few that at least attempts to present itself as parody.

the only thing that they had in common with the Dragon was that they all died on mysterious ways after doing those movies.
except for Sammo Hung, he´s part of the chinese martial arts movie history

    @ BLITZ_LF

amen, but f*** the jpurney he should go get his revenge

@ what about a new shenmue game from you guys? your crew is the only one right now who could make it,

...I think I just fell in love with that semi----ed looking face Sammo Hung keeps doing...

I saw a mock-umentary film a few years ago with a similar Bruce Lee imitation theme, with also touched on the subject of how hard it is for Asian-american actors to get work. but ofcourse I can't remember the name of the flick.

@gjk-23__ @YscEvoldz Again guys, not everything we post here at the Newswire is going to be about our games, sometimes it'll just be about things we here at Rockstar are enjoying and want to share with you all!
        • YscEvoldzon February 9 2012, 11:23amReply
          Which game this related to?
          • gjk-23__on February 9 2012, 11:11amReply
I had no idea there were films mocking Bruce Lee's death and it should of been kept that way for me not knowing.

Please R* stay on topic with rockstar related news. Its prity funny you guys remove comments that are off topic when you put these unrelated videos on the NEWSWIRE page !!!!!!! Please stop doing this. I come here for Rockstar related news not look for movies I want to watch.

I wouln't be the least bit surprised if you removed this comment. Freedom of speech HA Rockstar sellouts LOL.

I've seen these movies...classics.! But I also remember how the Japanese film studios ALSO tried to cash in on the Bruce Lee's death with Sonny Chiba and for anybody who has seen "The Streetfighter", you'll know how groundbreaking the film was looking at it in hindsight of today's martial arts/action flicks. Personally, I would LOVE to see a Rockstar rendition of "The Streetfighter" a la "The Warriors" but maybe with a more sandbox style AND a tweaked fighting mechanic. I've actually been piecing together a storyline for such a project for about two years, now, and even though I've yet to put pencil to paper, I think it may be worth the time.

Ow my brain. Y'know I think the real Bruce might've taken offense at those guys being called clones, since he could've kicked their collective asses in about four seconds apiece.
Hate to admit I actually did see "Enter The Game of Death" at a drive-in once. It was a double-feature with Star Encounters War Trek of the 3D Kind (In ThirD!)

                  Very cool R*
I have read many books and of course seen all of Bruce Lee's movies. I'm a big fan of his and Martial Arts. I have a Brown Belt in Kick Boxing and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Judo.
I'm also a major R*, GTA, RDR, Bully, etc. and check the newswire about onec a day so when I see something on Bruce Lee it made my day which up untill now has sucked "BIG TIME". Thank You
Also R*, please make a Kung Fu/Fighting Game. Other people have posted ths too. I think you guys could make a fighting game that is unique and that would crush other fighting games to date. A R* Fighting Game, just take my money

Rockstar you should defiantly a kung fu game. With weapons too, samurai swords. The protagonist should go on a spiritual journey.

Thanks to R* Y for the link.

I have read this and Lee died from an allergic reaction to the muscle relaxant (meprobamate) in Equagesic, they gave him an analgesic (painkiller) in combination with Equagesic,(muscle relaxant) that gave him a allergic reaction, okay whose fault is it ? maybe a BIG mistake by the doctor, mmm! think it over.

I'ts a shame that a BIG star like Lee died on wrong medication.

And Thanks ***Rockstar*** for the recommendation.

This is cool something from Bruce Lee one of my biggest movie stars that has lived. I like this R* it's a shame that they (killed??? him) I'm not sure if they have killed him, but I have read and heard this just like his son Bradon Lee he was also a HUGE good movie star. The BEST movie is The Bruce Lee Story. He was the BEST in martial arts all over the world. :D

THNX For This ***Rockstar*** Realy Thanks :)
