Check It Out: Do Ho Suh

Posted on January 20 2012, 5:18pm | Author: R* S | Filed Under: Rockstar

We recently got the chance during the holiday season to check out a pretty amazing installation at London's Tate Modern - a great example of the possibilities in bridging the gap between real and imagined spaces.

Korean-born and now NYC-based sculptor and artist Do Ho Suh's exhibit is minimalistic at first glance but deceptively sophisticated: sculptures made of cloth, featuring a staircase ("Staircase-III"), floating in mid-air as seen above.

Suh's other work includes "Reflection" - part of the Gallery Hermes in Tokyo - a mirrored reflection of a grand gate, inspired by personal memories of the former entrance to his childhood home in Seoul; and "Karma" - a striking and massive sculpture of a giant in slacks and dress shoes stepping atop swarms of tiny people.

The amount of time involved in putting this together must have been insane. I like the details he put into it, with simple wire and cloth. The lights, switches conduit and banisters. Now that's getting creative with simple materials. My works are usually simple things too. But it's never recognized as art. Such as taking 100 year old glass windows, stripping them of the lead paint, and then painting them to look like they are 100 years old with modern paints.. lol

Pretty awesome, I don't know what has it to do with videogames but nevermind, it's cool.

Hey R*, I've been to the Tate Museum of London last year and the Do Ho Hu staircase is the best thing I've seen in the museum. The visit was a bit boring because there's not a lot of interesting thing to see in the museum (except the staircase and the machine which throw away piece of paper with unreadable inscription on them).
Nice to know that I've been to the same place as you !
