Rockstar Games and Sony Joint Statement on L.A. Noire

Posted on May 19 2011, 3:50pm | Author: R* Q | Filed Under: Support

We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3’s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire.  At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat.   We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise.   If you are experiencing any issues with L.A. Noire or your PS3 hardware, please contact technical support using any of the means provided below:

We can assure you that these issues are very isolated and not at all related to the L.A. Noire game disc - any other issues please take to http://support.rockstargames.com and they can help. Thanks all.

Great, I just got LA Noire, and my PS3, which didn't have any problems before for nearly four years, died while playing it. It may just be a coincidence, but I find it very striking that it survived playing many games, but died playing LA Noire, the game that is infamous for killing PS3's...

WOW!!!!!!! I tought it was my 80g bc all the games were working fine even the ps2 games as well.It was in Gameformer magazine i saw the L.A Noir game.I thought it looked like a really kick ass game and could not wait to come When i got the game i was so stoked i got in about 3 chapers in and it did this couple beeps and bonce me off.I was thinking that was kind of weird.I played it again and it did again.I was only playing for about 4 or 5 minutes.then after that i tryed a few more times and i cant get passed 5 minutes of playing with out turn it self off,so i played other games and they were fine and took a long break from la noir then i went back to it .It did the same thing.Im glad to know that theres other peeps on here talking about the same thing.Ijust discovered this like i said i thought my system was screwed.i'm happy to know that my ps3 is ok and its just the game but then again thats is kickass game and would liked to play the whole thing i cant ...man that really sux not cool ROCKSTAR YOU BETTER FIGURE OUT SOMETHING HELP US GAMERMERS SOMEHOW GOD DAMN IT

No freeze, but the PS3 fan works at full speed, which is pretty noisy and annoying. No other game causes the same behavior...Clearly there is a problem here !

I have a ps3 fatty 60 gig, and all my games work perfectly fine with the exception of LA?? ?NOIRE? i have been waiting for this game for 3 weeks and to my dismay i cant even get 5 min into the game without it shutting down my system(yellow light n 3 beeps). i have tryed 2 different discs as i exchanged the first one i bought, both with the same outcome SHUTTING DOWN for no apparent reason, I have the latest FW 3.61, i have latest update 1.01 and still no sucsess in enjoying the game, ...ive been a rockstarr fan for the longest time and still am but its discouraging to hear that because it is only a small number affected by this incident they seem fit to disregard there customers concerns. I would NOT RECOMMEND anyone to by this game untill the issues have been corrected because at the end of the day its DAMAGING YOUR SYSTEM you could end up forking out for a new PS3 SYSTEM as a result of a DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. LA NOIRE IS BROKEN......PLEASE FIX iT....

I wish I would have research this game more then I did before I bought it. I was playing it enjoying myself and noticed the ps3 (80 gig fat) was much louder then usual. Paused it and it the cooling fan ramped up to a speed I didn't even know it had. I pulled the ps3 out vacuumed the vents to no effect. I opened up the ps3 and blew it out with compressed air, it wasn't dirty to begin with but that didn't help either.

I said screw it and played anyway. It will run for about 45 minutes and crash. At that time I still did put one and two together. I thought it was my ps3, but I was playing black ops and portals 2 for hours with no problems. Went back to la noire and once again screaming fan and crashes.

Then I did some research and found these issues. I took it back to best buy and raised hell until a store manager gave me a store credit. I got crysis 2 and it works fine.

My suggestion is to avoid this game even with newer systems. However if it does self destruct your ps3 a manager at gamestop said there are a couple tricks on YouTube that will help fix. He said la noire grenaded his ps3 but he was able to fix it with a heat gun.

this is bull man..i have an older fat ps3..i cant even get past the first mission! tried all the "fixes" and nothing works...rockstar has always put out high quality stuff..this feels like a slap in the face. im feeling like an idiot for buying my game anywhere but gamestop, because all i can do is return it for another courrupted disc. shine your shoes rockstar, and fix this mess.

I am embarassed for these guys for having to lie to customers.

I have a PS3 for years, and this never happened.
Also, if the problem is not with the game nor the system, where is it?

My review for LA Noire in any site i know will be: Do not buy this game it damages your system.

So Rockstar replied to my PS3 overheating ticket saying that they've "confirmed" LA Noire is not the cause of the problem. Are they not taking our feedback seriously? My console works perfectly fine with EVERY other game. LA Noire is the ONLY game that causes problems with my console and forces it to shutdown, sometimes even within 5 minutes of starting the game. So, I must conclude the LA Noire is the cause. What other explanation could there be? I believe Rockstar's "confirmation" is in error and plead with them to reinvestigate the issue. From their reply, it sounds like they are abandoning the customers that paid good money for their game...

I have a 40GB PS3 and have been playing (albeit awkwardly) for a good 4 hours straight earlier today, and last ---ht for quite a bit as well.

NOT once has the issue of freezing/overheating occured except once -- that was when I tried to go to the PS Store from within the game (it crashed). Seems to have fixed itself today though.

Aside from the control issue I mentioned earlier (and have raised it with support too) I love the game.

                                :)

You turn the PS3 off before it overheats but from what I am hearing it only going on with the older PS3 it hasn't happened to me but I do have a 3rd gen 80 GB but GTA SA did the same thing to my PS2 but still that was because it was old

It seems that Rockstar are worried to take the blame!!! You sold a faulty game without testing it properly... your suggestions don't work and your game better be worth the hassle!! Sony keep saying its Rockstar and visa versa, the claims they are working on it will take weeks before a conclusion is found. Also i don't understand why we must change our gaming habits to accommodate this game. if i wish to play a game i play it in my fashion and not in the way that Rockstar recommend.
As others have stated every other game works fine on my system, but LA Noire DOESN'T!!!!!

I am playing on a slim 160. I'm noticing on the support forum that it appears to be a handful of people complaining over and over (PS3 and 360). They generally seem to own the older models of each console. Anyone having problems on the newer consoles?
                                        • id0liciouson May 20 2011, 4:16pmReplyFlag
I'm sorry, but even if it's technically not the game DISC, it is still the fault of Rockstar for putting out a game that taxes the console so heavily that it overheats some models (due to hardware differences).

Developers should be testing their games across all models of console hardware. There is a clear pattern that I've seen with both the older XBOX's and PS3's being affected the worst regarding this game.

If you run Furmark, Gamma Cruncher, Prime 95, etc. on a PC without monster cooling, you could easily burn out your graphics card/cpu. Just an example of how "properly working software" can still be harmful to hardware.

Rockstar should have done more testing. Now they are blaming the hardware, which magically ONLY fails while playing this game. "Fix" your game Rockstar, as in you had better find a way to decrease the load put on the consoles GPUs, SPUs, etc. This is inherently YOUR fault and NOT a hardware "problem." Sure, maybe SOME gamers system are a little dusty, but I highly doubt all of these reports coming in are from gamers who never clean/take care of their systems.

Get real, Rockstar. Quit playing the blame game; it's for children. Find a way to make the game run reliably on all systems/models, instead of being a potential hazard to older hardware. This would fall under the responsibility of the DEVELOPER.

I can already see subpoenas being written up by gamers who systems just got fried.

If you wait too long to provide some sort of a fix, then the geeks will really come out to play and soon you'll be reading stories of how "super geek reveals the source of console hardware failures: poorly written/optimized code in L.A. Noire."
