L.A. Noire First Reviews from GameSpot, The Guardian, Giant Bomb, 1Up & More

Posted on May 16 2011, 5:07pm | Author: R* S | Filed Under: Games

On the eve of L.A. Noire's North American launch (coming to Europe and Australia this Friday), we present some of the very first reviews to hit today...

"L.A. Noire is a bold release, because it defies the expectations not just for the type of game Rockstar usually releases, but also for the type of game that receives this degree of care and proficiency in its execution." - Giant Bomb: 5/5

http://www.giantbomb.com/la-noire/61-21500/reviews/

"This is vastly different from the countless first- and third-person shooters and all the 'me too' open-world games sitting on store shelves. All the things I've only read about in Dashiell Hammett novels, or seen in film classics like Double Indemnity, have all come to interactive life in L.A. Noire. Team Bondi has gone to great lengths to wrap you up in the game's story, and from my experience they've succeeded. I investigated these crimes. I apprehended the suspects. I pieced together all the clues. L.A. Noire had me more involved in its first thirty minutes than some other games do in their entirety, and that makes this a game you may regret passing on. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon -- and for the rest of your gaming life." - 1UP: A

"Ever since it worked out how to assemble pixels so that they resembled something more recognisable than aliens, the games industry has dreamed of one thing above all else - a game that is indistinguishable from a film, except that you can control the lead character. With L.A. Noire, it just might, finally, have found the embodiment of that particular holy grail." - The Guardian: 5/5 Stars

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2011/may/16/la-noire-game-review

"L.A. Noire approaches the dichotomy of interaction and narrative by integrating them together inextricably... Each element of the game is so intertwined with the other that it takes some time to realize the subversive genius on display; the story is the game, the game is the story... L.A. Noire transcends genre and the expectations of what a game can be and casts a spell that I have yet to shake." - G4: 5/5

"L.A. Noire is a game that needed making. It offers something truly unique in an unbeatable setting... a breath of fresh air in an otherwise increasingly stale industry." - NowGamer: 9.3/10

http://ps3.nowgamer.com/reviews/ps3/9811/la-noire

"What a marvellous advert L.A. Noire can be for the eclecticism of video games, taking familiar mechanics that have been honed down the years and moulding them into an ambitious drama of exceptional impact... on the strength of this case, I can only hope the rest of the industry follows LA Noire’s lead." - The Telegraph: 9/10

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/video-games/8516469/LA-Noire-review.html

"L.A. Noire is a unique game with a terrific sense of period atmosphere, absorbing investigation mechanics, and a haunting tale with plenty of moments that would be right at home in a classic film noir." - Gamespot: 9/10 Editor's Choice

http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/adventure/lanoire/review.html?tag=topten%3Ballscore%3B1&page=1

“L.A. Noire is a staggering technological achievement, offering up a fantastically detailed open world, a hugely engrossing story, varied gameplay and some of the best acting performances ever to appear in a game. More impressively, all of its parts work together beautifully, creating an immensely fun adventure that’s worth replaying at least once." - GamesRadar: 9/10

http://www.gamesradar.com/ps3/la-noire/review/la-noire-review/a-2011051693529489014/g-2006092512588826087/p-3

"If you really want to appreciate the aesthetics (especially the best-in-class lighting), turn on black-and-white mode and see just how closely Team Bondi and Rockstar have replicated the look of a classic film... This is a little glimpse of an explored territory in interactive media, a hint at an incredibly exciting future that I can only hope we're hurtling towards." - Joystiq: 4.5/5

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/16/la-noire-review/

"L.A. Noire is a testament to the possibility of bringing dark, adult, mature games to the mainstream market... truly mature, with the kind of narrative you'd only expect to see in a major TV drama series or crime movie. No game released this generation has tackled the subject matter found in L.A. Noire with the same degree of intelligence and respect, and no game has so seamlessly blended gameplay from various genres together so seamlessly, in a way that delivers something far more unique in experience than the sum of its parts. Add that sense of uniqueness and intelligence to the fact that L.A. Noire is a terrific bloody videogame, and you have what is guaranteed to be a classic for years to come. True maturity and narrative depth in mainstream gaming begins right here." - Destructoid: 9/10

I have to say, after playing L.A. Noire, I think there are lots of new experiences being cooked up everywhere, by all the different game developers. Once their current projects are free, I think future production pipelines are going to see a much higher degree of role-playing (by which I mean decision-making and sophisticated dialogue options), investigation (Naughty Dog, you see this? Indiana Jones did this kind of stuff too!), and possibly a furthering of the current interest in period-piece open-world games, which currently has produced Assassin's Creed, Red Dead Redemption (good job there two R*), and L.A. Noire.

The only thing I really want to emphasize outside of what I have already is simply that Andrew Hale needs to be considered the great musical mind he is. He's created some of the best interactive musical experiences I've yet seen in the last few years, and if Rockstar knows what they're doing, they'll treat him like the treasure he is and carry him along into their next project.

I have the strategy guide and became so obsessed with this game that I completed every achievement available in the game.

The frame rate that was achived on the Xbox 360 was quite an amazing accomplishment!
The game is fun and Intelligent anyone who say's different is most likely a GTA fan and are between the ages of 12-16.

I had 0 respect for RockStar prior to L.A Noire. Always thought GTA games were aimed at kids who barely thought and got it for the violence alone.
I'm not one of those anti-violence in video games people but to me the GTA series was always junk gaming.

For those that are talking about how there is no action in LA Noire...it's a detective game, there are many, many, street crimes you can do and there are many things to look for around the LA area. This is a very mature game (not talking about the rating, I'm talking about the actual content and everything that you are able to). Unlike the other Rockstar games where you could go around killing everyone, you are actually a DETECTIVE who is sworn to protect the people of LA. I like the period that this is set in. The 40's brought on a huge change in the USA, with the ending of WWII, many veterans coming back from war with Post Traumatic Syndrome, and the whole country in the Great Depression. I haven't beaten the game yet and I obviously won't give away any spoilers, but when I first played it I really enjoyed because this is one of the view game that made me use my noggin instead of going around killing every person (although it is fun to crash into the cars). I also enjoy the suits that these guys wear. I'd kill to have a suit like that =P It's reminiscent of Heavy Rain with Rockstar's flare to it.

I was disapointed in this game. The graphics are sweet, the acting is top notch, and the story line is good. But the thing is, it's just a revamp of all the old "point and click" games. Also the dialog options are limited, and I felt like I was being led around by the nose. I have come to expect more from Rockstar.

I enjoyed this game as overall and think a lot of the complaints by others are ignorant or stupid(frames rate, really?); however, you must be kidding me with so little action. I mean there is even several achievements for how may people you kill and how you do it but because there is so little action you really need to be aware of them early on if you want them without replays; furthermore, without the ability to go and get into some fights at the players lesser only leaves the storyline and minor crimes to solve, repetitious much? I am hopping for some DLC to make the freerome a little more time worthy and spice up this otherwise platinum hit.

Rockstar L.A Noire was great but it would of been the s**t if it was modern day with today's car's and today's Cop cars (Chargers And Crown Vic's) i give L.A Noire a 8.7 but if it was modern day i would gave it 9.8 rockstar you really should consider making another game like this but this time modern day (2011-2012-2013) make it modern day and it would be my top most wanted game list (MAKE IT HAPPEN ROCKSTAR OR MAKE ANOTHER GTA)

@tma928 no no no I think it's just when you pre-order or if the particular Gamestop needed to ship more copies. Hope it's the second idea cuz more copies needed means more sales for Rockstar :)

this game looks great Rockstar. was wondering if you could tell me though if there is any truth in the rumour there is no such game called the agency being made and this is to keep away unwanted attention of rockstar north making gta. same kind of thing george lucas did when making star wars VI & called it the blue harvest.
